Closing ratio benchmarks

What a realistic close rate looks like, by line.

How to read these

Lead to sale
Share of raw leads, bought or internet, that end up buying a policy.
Quote to bind
Share of people who get a quote and then buy.
Referral close
Close rate on referrals, existing customers and warm introductions.

These are approximate industry rules of thumb, not official standards. Results vary by agency, carrier and lead source. Highlighted rows are the lines that tend to close best from a bought lead.

What the blue column is, and what it is not

We do not sell the policy. You do. These targets are what the lead quality supports, not a promise of what you will close. The quote and the close are yours.

They sit in the upper half of each industry range for one reason: we cap every lead at three agents, two on commercial, and life is exclusive. Fewer people calling the same name means a better shot at it. Everything after that is speed, follow-up and your carrier bench.

Personal lines

Personal lines close faster and more often than commercial, but each sale is worth less.

Life and health

Life and health close lower because buyers stall, and life adds underwriting drop-off after the sale.

Commercial lines

Commercial closes lower per lead because sales take longer and businesses wait for renewal. Each sale is worth more.

What actually moves these numbers

Four things, in the order they matter.

  1. Speed to contactCalling in the first few minutes closes far more than calling hours later. This is the single biggest one.
  2. How many agents share itExclusive and low-share leads close noticeably higher than leads sold to six or eight agencies.
  3. Follow-upA lot of sales happen after the fifth attempt. Most agents stop at two.
  4. Carrier optionsMore markets to quote means more quotes that win on price.

Fewer agents on every lead

Three agents maximum. Two on commercial. Life is exclusive.
